Should you Bench Boost in Gameweek 1?
Bench Boost is one of only two chips FPL lets you play in Gameweek 1 — and the one week you cannot Wildcard into a squad built for it. What the rules actually allow, and the case for and against.
Bench Boost adds your four bench players' scores to your gameweek total instead of leaving them on the sidelines. The conventional wisdom is to save it for a double gameweek, when those four might play twice. So the idea of burning it in Gameweek 1 — no doubles, no form data, no idea who actually starts — sounds like a beginner's mistake.
It is more interesting than that, mostly because of a rule most people never look up.
What the rules actually allow
FPL publishes its chip windows in the same public data this site is built on. For the 2026/27 season they look like this:
Read that again, because it is the whole argument. Bench Boost is legal in Gameweek 1. Wildcard is not. The two chips people normally think of as interchangeable planning tools are not available at the same time, and the week the Bench Boost opens is the one week you cannot rebuild your squad first.
That cuts both ways, and it is worth being precise about how.
The case for playing it in GW1
Your squad is never healthier than it is in Gameweek 1. Nobody has picked up a knock in your colours yet, nobody is suspended for a red card they have not received, and no bench player has been quietly dropped after a bad August. Every injury the season is going to inflict on your fifteen is still in the future.
You had unlimited transfers to build it. Before the first deadline you can change your squad as many times as you like at no cost. That is the only point in the season where a fifteen-player squad — not an eleven with four passengers — costs you nothing to assemble. Every later Bench Boost has to be built toward with one or two transfers a week, or by spending a Wildcard on it.
Every team plays. Gameweek 1 has ten fixtures across four days, 21 to 24 August 2026, with all twenty clubs involved exactly once. There are no blanks. A mid-season Bench Boost in a normal gameweek carries the risk that one of your four benched players has no fixture at all; in GW1 that cannot happen.
The case against
The budget fights you. £100.0m across fifteen players, maximum three per club. Every pound you move to the bench comes off your starting eleven. Building a bench worth boosting means a weaker XI in the same gameweek you are boosting — you are not adding four players' points so much as redistributing your budget and hoping the total comes out ahead.
Gameweek 1 is when you know least about who starts. Pre-season minutes are close to meaningless, new signings have no established role, and managers rotate through August in ways they will not in March. A £4.5m defender who looked nailed on in July can be an unused substitute by the time the first deadline passes. Bench Boost pays you for players who play; GW1 is the week you are least able to predict which ones will.
You are spending it on a single gameweek. The chip expires at gameweek 19 whether or not you use it, so "saving" it is not free — but a first-half double gameweek, if one arrives, gives your bench two fixtures each rather than one. Playing it in GW1 is a decision to take a guaranteed single over a possible double.
And you cannot reset afterwards. This is the sharp end of the rule above. If you build a boost-friendly squad for GW1 — spreading budget to make fifteen players viable — you cannot Wildcard out of that shape in GW2, because the Wildcard does not open until then and you will have just used your one free structural reset on nothing. You are committing your opening squad to the chip, then living with it.
What it actually costs, in points
Arguments about budget distribution are easy to make and hard to feel, so here are two squads built by this site's own optimiser from its own projections. Same £100.0m, same model, one difference in how they were built — and the numbers below update as the projections do, so what you are reading is current rather than whatever it happened to be the day this was written.

One half of that is structural: locking in the four cheapest players guarantees a weaker bench, so the bench gap is always going to be real. The other half is not. Whether concentrating the budget actually buys a stronger eleven depends on how well the model can separate players at the time you ask it — and pre-season, with no form or minutes to work from, it barely can. The caption above reports which of those happened, from the numbers themselves, rather than telling you what to expect.
That is worth sitting with, because it undercuts the usual framing. "Stars and scrubs versus balance" is normally argued as a trade — you give up bench points to buy a better eleven. If the eleven barely improves, it is not a trade at all, just a worse squad. Whether that holds once real minutes exist is a question this page will answer in public, since the projections behind it are recorded before every deadline and scored afterwards.
One caution on reading those numbers. They are point estimates, not ranges with error bars, because our model does not publish a confidence interval and we are not going to invent one. The gameweek-by-gameweek columns show how a projection moves across fixtures; they are not a best case and a worst case.
What we are not going to tell you
You will find articles quoting exact figures for what Bench Boost returned in past seasons, or what percentage of top-10k managers played it in GW1. We do not have that data. FPL's API exposes per-fixture player history for the current season only and clears it at the rollover, and it does not publish historical chip usage broken down by rank at all.
So rather than repeat a number we cannot check, here is the honest version: the reasoning above is derived from rules you can verify yourself and from how the constraints interact. The judgement is ours. Treat it as an argument, not a statistic.
What we are doing is recording our model's projection before every deadline, so that from Gameweek 1 onward this site can show you what was forecast against what actually happened — including for the bench players this decision turns on. That comparison will be real data, and you will be able to see the misses as well as the hits.
The best Bench Boost draft right now
If you are going to do it, here is the fifteen our optimiser would draft for it. One thing worth noticing before you read the names: with the chip on there is no bench, so "the best Bench Boost draft" and "the best fifteen" are the same question. That is the entire trick of the chip — for one week it deletes the distinction the rest of your season is organised around.

Two honest caveats on those names. The first is that this is pre-season: the model has no current-season form or minutes, so it is leaning on last season and fixtures, and it cannot yet tell a nailed-on starter from a squad player who happens to be cheap. Read the shape of the squad — where the money goes — rather than trusting any individual pick.
The second is that it optimises for one gameweek. A squad built to maximise gameweek 1 is not automatically the squad you want to own in gameweek 6, and you cannot Wildcard away from it until gameweek 2. If a name here only makes sense as a one-week punt, that is a reason to leave it out, not a reason to plan around it.
A way to decide
If you want a rule of thumb rather than an essay: build the squad you actually want for the season first, without thinking about the chip at all. Then look at your four bench players and ask a single question — would you be comfortable starting all four of them?
If the answer is yes, your bench is strong enough that Bench Boost is close to free money and GW1 is a defensible time to take it. If the answer is no, the chip is not the problem; boosting a bench you would not start is paying full price for four players you have already decided are not good enough.
Do not rebuild a good squad into a worse one to make the chip work. The chip is worth a few points. The squad is worth your season.
